It is estimated that over 200,000 children are victims of family abduction each year. A family abduction occurs when a family member takes a child in violation of their legal guardian’s legitimate custodial rights.

Over 1 million children run away each year:
Runaways occur when a child leaves home without permission for one night or more. For older children it is generally accepted that a child is a runaway when they have spent at least two nights away from home. A throwaway can also occur, this is when a parent orders a child to leave home without creating alternative arrangements.
